Bio-based Barrier Coatings for Packaging
Plastics are some of the main components in flexible packaging and have interesting oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. However, due to new (and future) legal restrictions on plastic usage, the use of paper and cardboard coatings has become of great interest. The current options available for sustainable coatings, however, do not perform well in terms of barrier properties, so it becomes imperative to develop effective coatings that can allow the use of paper and cardboard packaging to replace plastic-based options.
The “Bio-based barrier coatings for packaging” project aims to develop a bio-coating with barrier properties to allow the large-scale use of paper packaging applied to food. Additionally, it is intended that the bio-coating is biodegradable and has suitable properties for application in food.
